Plan the barge crossing to the airport generously. Queues for vehicles can be long at peak hours, and missing a barge can mean missing a flight. Leaving at least two hours before departure is sensible.

Book whale watching with a certified operator. Mayotte applies strict rules for approaching humpbacks, and good operators follow them carefully. The best months are August and September.

Ask the lodge about water supply before arrival. Mayotte has experienced long periods of water cuts, and even when supply is normal, conserving water is appreciated. Bottled water should be used for drinking.

Try mataba, cassava leaves cooked in coconut milk, and brochettes grilled on the roadside, known locally as brochettis. They are simple island dishes, and the lodge restaurant or reception can recommend good local places.

Carry euros in cash. Mayotte uses the euro, and while cards work in larger shops and hotels, markets and small restaurants often accept only cash.

Follow local advice on safety. Avoid driving at night on isolated roads, keep valuables out of sight in the car, and check with the lodge each day about any roadblocks or incidents before setting out for distant beaches.
